The Fujairah Challenger back-to-back events scheduled for March 2 to March 16 in the United Arab Emirates was called off on Tuesday due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. Players and tournament staff were forced to leave the courts and move to designated safe areas after a security alert was issued.
Over the weekend, the United States and Israel carried out air strikes on Iran, reportedly killing the Islamic Republic’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. In response, missiles were launched toward countries across the Arabian Peninsula.
“Following ongoing security concerns in the region, the ATP Challenger Tour events scheduled in Fujairah this week and next week (Fujairah 2) have been cancelled,” the ATP said in a statement.
“The safety and wellbeing of our players and tournament personnel is our highest priority. Players remain on site and are being fully supported, with accommodation and all immediate needs covered while onward travel arrangements are explored.”
