MASPALOMAS/STARNBERG, August 1, 2025
The ITF W100 DISA Gran Canaria-Maspalomas has its four singles semifinalists confirmed following a thrilling day of high-level tennis and strong fan engagement at Club Conde Jackson Maspalomas. Top seed Arantxa Rus will face Germany’s Caroline Werner, while local favorite Kaitlin Quevedo will take on Russian qualifier Ekaterina Ovcharenko for a place in the final.
Rus was the first to book her place in the final four of the ITF World Tennis Tour event, displaying her trademark dominance with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory over Spain’s Aliona Bolsova. Playing on Center Court, Rus left no room for doubt, overwhelming the Moldovan-born Spaniard in under an hour.
Crowds packed Center Court again for an all-Spanish clash between 235th-ranked Kaitlin Quevedo and Ariana Geerlings. The Canarian got off to a confident and focused start, racing to a 3-0 lead in just 30 minutes with accurate shot-making and strong baseline control. Unfortunately, the match ended prematurely as Geerlings was forced to retire due to injury, handing Quevedo a spot in the semifinals.
The last Spanish player left in the singles draw, Lucia Cortez, fell short against one of the tournament’s surprise performers: Ekaterina Ovcharenko. The Russian qualifier continued her impressive run, defeating Cortez 6-2, 6-4 to secure a spot in the semis. Ovcharenko has proven to be a force on multiple fronts, also competing earlier in the day in the doubles semifinals.
The most tightly contested quarterfinal came in the duel between third seed Justina Mikulskyte of Lithuania and Caroline Werner. Werner took the opening set with ease, but Mikulskyte clawed her way back to force a deciding third-set tiebreak. In the end, it was Werner who held her nerve, clinching the win 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 in one of the most exciting matches of the tournament so far.
In doubles, the final is also set: top seeds Magali Kempen of Belgium and Anna Siskova from the Czech Republic will meet second seeds Madeleine Brooks of Great Britain and Eudice Chong from Hong Kong.
