KIGALI/STARNBERG, March 8, 2026

Joel Schwaerzler is the new king in Kigali, as the 20-year-old Austrian captured the title of the 2026 Rwanda Challenger 1. The singles final of the ATP Challenger clay-court tournament had to be extended over two days after heavy rain interrupted play on Saturday.

After five games into the second set, the title match between Schwaerzler and Italian qualifier Stefano Napolitano was suspended, forcing organizers to postpone the remainder of the final until Sunday. When play resumed the world No. 214 maintained his momentum and eventually sealed a 7-6(5), 7-6(6) victory.

Schwaerzler, who was born in South Africa, lifted his second ATP Challenger career trophy after his triumph at the Macedonian Open in Skopje two years ago. The former junior world No. 1 earned $17,000 in prize money as well as 75 ATP Ranking points.

Schwaerzler and Napolitano will soon meet again, as they will clash in the first round of next week’s Rwanda Challenger 2.

Clarke/Houkes triumph in doubles

On Saturday, Jay Clarke and Max Houkes captured the doubles title. The unseeded British-Dutch combination outlasted top seeds Siddhant Banthia of India and Bulgarian Alexander Donski 6–4, 6–7(6), 12–10 in one hour and 37 minutes.

It was the first team title for Houkes and Clarke, but the Dutchman claimed his third Kigali doubles title in a row following his triumphs alongside Clement Tabur in 2024 and Jesper de Jong last season.

Clarke and Houkes split $4,980 in prize money and collected 75 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
