Thiago Monteiro became the first Brazilian to book a place in the quarterfinals of the Itajaí Open ATP  Challenger 75 tournament offering a total prize purse of $107,000 and 75 ATP Ranking points to the champion.

Playing on the clay courts of the Itamirim Clube de Campo, the 30-year-old from Ceará delivered a solid and controlled performance to defeat Franco Agamenone, the Italian champion from last week’s AAT Challenger in Buenos Aires, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Monteiro’s next opponent will be second-seeded Paraguayan Adolfo Daniel Vallejo who beat Brazilian wild card entry Eduardo Ribeiro 6-3, 6-2. It will be the pair’s first meeting. Speaking about his preparation for unfamiliar opponents, he explained that he and his team leave nothing to chance: watching matches, using detailed statistical software, and analyzing video footage to be fully prepared. Monteiro also reflected positively on his current level of play and on the benefit of having a few days without matches, as he will return to the court on Friday.
