Three-time Wuhan Open champion and recent US Open winner Aryna Sabalenka and Wimbledon winner Iga Swiatek lead the field in Wuhan, where results could have a big say in which of the two players finishes year-end No.1 in the WTA rankings given the 1000 ranking points on offer to the champion. The event also boasts a total prizemoney purse of $3,654,963.

Coco Guaff, who was a semi-finalist last year in Wuhan and seems to thrive on Chinese courts, is another contender for the prestigious title. Wimbledon and US Open runner-up Amanda Anisimova, World No.7 Jessica Pegula, teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva, two-time Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini, former US Open champion Emma Raducanu and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka will be among her rivals.

Sabalenka, Swiatek, Gauff, Raducanu and Osaka are five of eight Grand Slam winners in this year’s Wuhan Open Main Draw, along with Elena Rybakina (Wimbledon), Jelena Ostapenko (Roland Garros) and Sofia Kenin (Australian Open).

Wuhan local Qinwen Zheng, who was runner up to Sabalenka last year, has been forced to withdraw from the tournament. The World No.9 recently underwent surgery on an elbow injury and had to retire from her second round match at the China Open on Sunday.

Qinwen Zheng will be replaced by Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maniero in the draw. The Main Draw will be made Saturday at 4pm local time.
