OLBIA/STARNBERG, October 2, 2025
The third edition of the Olbia Challenger is fast approaching. The event, organised by Tennis Club Terranova and MEF Tennis Events, will take place from October 12 to 19, once again bringing world-class tennis to Sardinia. The ATP Challenger 125, supported for the third consecutive year by Health Partner Mater Olbia, boasts a strong entry list led by World No. 72 Alejandro Tabilo. Other notable names include former Top 10 star Pablo Carreno Busta and promising talent Nishesh Basavareddy, a former junior World No. 3.
Also returning is Spain’s Martin Landaluce, who lifted his first Challenger trophy last year in Olbia after defeating Mattia Bellucci in the final. The defending champion is back to try and hold on to his crown. Italy will also be well represented with Francesco Maestrelli confirmed in the main draw, while additional homegrown players are expected to join via wild cards. For many, this tournament represents an opportunity to confirm their progress, while for younger professionals, it is a chance to take important steps toward the ATP Tour.
Mater Olbia Hospital and UniCredit Allianz Support the Event
Mater Olbia Hospital continues its partnership for a third year. CEO Giovanni Paolo D’Incecco Bayard de Volo highlighted the values of sport, health, and well-being that the tournament embodies, stressing the positive impact such events have not only on players and fans but also on the hosting community.
A new prestigious partner joins this year: UniCredit Allianz Assicurazioni. General Director Paolo Novati underlined the company’s commitment to supporting young tennis talents while promoting security and confidence for families and businesses alike.
Institutional Support from the City and Region
The event once again enjoys strong backing from the Municipality of Olbia and the Sardinian Regional Government. Mayor Settimo Nizzi expressed pride in hosting a tournament that enhances the city’s international reputation, while Sports Councillor Elena Casu emphasised the significance of such high-level tennis for both Olbia and Sardinia, praising the organisers for their efforts and highlighting the educational value for local children involved as ball kids.
Recognition from Tennis Institutions
Franco Bellini, president of FITP Sardinia, praised the progress of TC Terranova and stressed the importance of the Olbia Challenger in developing Italy’s next generation of players. He cited recent examples such as Flavio Cobolli, now a Top 25 player, and Mattia Bellucci, a Top 70 competitor, who were both finalists in Olbia in past editions. Rising Italian prospects like Lorenzo Carboni are also expected to make their mark.
Italian Billie Jean King Cup captain Tathiana Garbin and Internazionali BNL d’Italia tournament director Paolo Lorenzi echoed the importance of tournaments like Olbia for Italian tennis, providing invaluable experience to young players. Both praised the organisation for continuously improving the facilities, including the inauguration of a new court this year.
Tennis Club Terranova Prepares for Another Showcase
Since the conclusion of last year’s edition, Tennis Club Terranova has worked hard to upgrade its facilities. Club president Giuseppe Bianco expressed pride in hosting the tournament once more, noting the addition of a fourth greenset court thanks to support from the Municipality of Olbia. He underlined the role of sponsors and the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation in helping elevate the event, which is increasingly recognised not only as a top sporting competition but also as an asset to the region’s cultural and economic life.
As anticipation builds, the 2025 Olbia Challenger promises another thrilling week of high-level tennis, combining established stars, rising talents, and a passionate local atmosphere in one of Italy’s most scenic sporting venues.
