Wednesday’s second-round matches at the Alicante Ferrero Challenger brought plenty of drama and excitement. The standout Spanish performance came from No. 8 seed Daniel Merida, who produced a solid 6-4, 6-3 win over Polish qualifier Maks Kasnikowski to book his spot in the quarterfinals of the ATP Challenger Tour 125 hard-court event.

It wasn’t all about the local favorites, though. Germany’s Tom Gentzsch continued his impressive run, dispatching Bulgaria’s Dimitar Kuzmanov 6-4, 6-4 to solidify his reputation as one of the tournament’s breakthrough stories. Another notable victory came from France’s Hugo Grenier, a two-time finalist in Alicante, who upset sixth seed Moez Echargui of Tunisia, winning 6-4, 6-4.

In the longest match of the day, George Loffhagen from Great Britain rallied from a set down to outlast Viktor Durasovic of Norway 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. The encounter lasted two hours and 13 minutes.
