Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who had never before reached a semifinal at a hard-court event on the Pro Circuit, emerged as the shining winner at the Guangzhou Huangpu International Tennis Open. The second seed from Argentina defeated Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 6–2, 6–3 in the final.
On his way to the title, Cerundolo dispatched Japan’s Yuta Shimizu, Russia’s Petr Bar Biryukov, Britain’s Dan Evans and No. 8 seed Billy Harris of Great Britain. The 23-year-old from Buenos Aires broke Tabilo’s serve four times and won 59 per cent of the total points played.

“It’s my first title on hard courts. I’m very happy and hope I can keep improving, especially on this surface. The atmosphere was really nice, and the people support you a lot,” Cerundolo said after the one-and-a-half-hour final.
“It’s my first time in China. I had never been here before and needed some time to adapt because of the time difference. The city is very nice and the tournament welcomed me warmly, so I felt very happy here.”
With his 11th ATP Challenger Tour career triumph, Cerundolo collected $22,730 in prize money along with 100 ATP Ranking points.
