MARANHAO/STARNBERG, September 15, 2025
US-American Hibah Shaikh captured the São Luís Women’s Tennis Cup on Sunday, defeating Argentina’s Martina Capurro 7–5, 6–2 in just over two hours. The ITF World Tennis Tour W15 event in Maranhão offered $15,000 in prize money and awarded 15 WTA Ranking points to Shaikh, who secured her second consecutive title in Brazil within two weeks. Thanks to her recent success, the 22-year-old is projected to reach a career-high WTA ranking of around No. 545.
“I’m not too focused on my ranking right now, but of course I’m happy with these wins. I’m pleased with how I’m playing and now I’ll go back home, rest and think about my next plans,” Shaikh said after the final.
Playing her second singles final of the season, Capurro started slowly but raised her level as the match went on, buoyed by support from the local crowd. In the second set, Shaikh broke early to lead 3–0 and then controlled the scoreboard to seal victory.
Born in the United States to an Indian mother, Shaikh ramped up her schedule in 2025 after graduating from the University of Virginia. “It was a tough week here — the sun and the heat make conditions challenging, but these are the weeks that make us stronger. I’m thankful to everyone who came to watch; I’ve had great moments in Brazil. In short, I’m happy and want to enjoy this moment,” she added.
