STARNBERG, September 12, 2025
Friday saw Argentina race to a 2-0 lead over 2024 finalists Netherlands in the Davis Cup Qualifiers second round in Groningen. Tomas Martin Etcheverry defeated Jesper de Jong 6-4 6-4 before Francisco Cerundolo sealed a 7-6(4) 6-1 win over Botic van de Zandschulp to put the visitors 2-0 up and one win from reaching the Final 8 in Bologna.
“It’s incredible for me,” said Etcheverry. “I played very well. Of course getting the victory for Argentina and getting the first point is really important. I’m very proud because I know what I did the past few weeks. How I was training, how I prepared for Davis Cup. It feels amazing.”
In the first Qualifiers second round tie to get underway, Germany also took a 2-0 advantage away from home against Japan, with Jan-Lennard Struff defeating Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4 6-7(4) 6-4 before Yannick Hanfmann overcame Shintaro Mochizuki 6-3 6-3.
“It was a very tight, close match, I would say” said Struff. “I think some points decided the match. Big fight and Yoshihito (Nishioka) is a very good player. We played three times before, he beat me two times and I knew it’s going to be a very tough match. I’m lucky to get the win at the end as well. I knew before the match he had like an eight match winning streak in Davis Cup which is like a huge achievement and it’s very tough to beat him. So I’m very happy to get the point, the first point for Germany for my country.”
Austria lead Hungary 2-0 in Debrecen after Jurij Rodionov defeated Fabian Marozsan 6-2 6-7(5) 7-5 and Lukas Neumayer claimed victory against Marton Fucsovics 6-3 3-6 7-6(7).
“It was a crazy match, it could have gone either way,” Rodionov said. “For one-and-a-half sets I was controlling the match and the pace. Then Fabi’s (Marozsan) level was too high. I kept fighting, I kept grinding and believing in myself. I am very happy I was able to win.”
France also lead Croatia 2-0 away from home as Corentin Moutet defeated Dino Prizmic 6-4 5-7 6-1 in three hours 18 minutes on his Davis Cup debut and Arthur Rinderknech beat Marin Cilic 6-2 6-4, meaning the away team leads 2-0 in all 4 of the Qualifiers second round ties that have wrapped up action on day one so far.
“It was tough, I didn’t expect it to be easy because he’s a great player” said Moutet. “It was my first match in the Davis Cup, of course it’s a lot of pressure. I had my plan and I knew if I keep doing it in a good way it will end up in a good way for me. I’m very happy with all the confidence that my teammates, my coach and all the staff put in me. I’m glad that I won the match for them.”
