HAGEN/STARNBERG, August 3, 2025
Day seven of the Platzmann Open 2025 delivered both triumph and turbulence, with Germany’s Hendrik Jebens and French partner Albano Olivetti capturing the weekend’s first trophy in a thrilling doubles final.
Meanwhile, the singles draw saw its biggest upset as top seed Botic van de Zandschulp bowed out in the quarterfinals. The Dutchman, widely considered the title favorite, fell 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3 in a rescheduled quarterfinal clash against compatriot Guy den Ouden. The sixth-seeded Den Ouden seized the opening set before van de Zandschulp appeared to wrestle control, leveling the match and gaining an early break in the decider. But the 23-year-old showed resilience, mounting a comeback to seal the biggest win of his career.
German Yannick Hanfmann had a busy Saturday, first wrapping up his delayed quarterfinal with a solid 7-6(6), 6-4 win over Jan Choinski. Later in the afternoon, he began his semifinal against Sweden’s Olle Wallin, a qualifier who has impressed all week. Wallin, a former U.S. college player, dropped the first set to the more experienced Hanfmann before rain once again interrupted proceedings.
The second singles semifinal between Den Ouden and Switzerland’s Jerome Kym was unable to get underway due to continued poor weather. Kym had earlier in the day ended the run of 17-year-old local wild car0d entry Niels McDonald, winner of this year’s junior French Open, with a composed 3–6, 6–3, 6–2 victory.
Despite the rain, fans packed the Center Court on Saturday afternoon to witness a thrilling doubles final. Top seeds Hendrik Jebens and Albano Olivetti edged past defending champion Bart Stevens from the Netherlands and his US-American partner Vasil Kirkov in a match tiebreak. The duo took the opening set 6-4, dropped the second in a tiebreak 6-7(2), but surged ahead in the decider to seal the championship 10-8.
Sunday will feature a tennis-packed finale to the tournament. Both singles semifinals are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., with the final set for later in the afternoon. Adding to the festive atmosphere, a legends exhibition match is scheduled for 1 p.m., featuring TC Rot-Weiß Hagen icons Karsten Braasch, Jens Woehrmann, Michael Kohlmann, and Gregor Paul.
