MASPALOMAS/STARNBERG, August 2, 2025
The most competitive edition in the history of the ITF W100 DISA Gran Canaria-Maspalomas has its dream final: top seed Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands will face Spain’s Kaitlin Quevedo, the first Canarian player to reach the final of this prestigious ITF World Tennis Tour W100 event. With packed stands and an electric atmosphere at Club Conde Jackson Maspalomas, both players secured their spots in Sunday’s title match after thrilling semifinal victories.
Rus, ranked No. 94 in the world and boasting 32 professional titles, was tested to the limit in a sensational semifinal on center court against Germany’s Caroline Werner, ranked 268. Despite an early 5-3 lead in the first set, Rus saw Werner fight back to 6-5, saving three set points before forcing a tiebreak. It took the Dutch top seed eight set points to finally seal the opener in a gripping finish.
The second set offered more high-intensity tennis, with long rallies and stunning cross-court backhands drawing cheers from the crowd. Both players exchanged games in a tight battle that once again came down to a tiebreak. This time, Rus dominated, securing a 7-6, 7-6 win and booking her place in the final.
All eyes were on 18-year-old Quevedo, ranked No. 235 and seeded fourth, as she took on Russia’s Ekaterina Ovcharenko, the tournament’s breakout performer who had come through qualifying and reached the semifinals in both singles and doubles.
The opening games were packed with thrilling exchanges—deep forehands from Ovcharenko countered by pinpoint aces and drop-shot winners from Quevedo. But the Canarian showed greater composure on key points, taking the first set 6-2 with clinical efficiency.
In the second, Ovcharenko resisted with crisp two-handed backhands, but Quevedo remained calm and focused under pressure. A series of powerful winners and smart recovery play saw her close the match 6-2, 6-3 on her third match point. With the win, she becomes the first local finalist in the event’s history and will now face Rus in what promises to be a spectacular showdown.
Kempen and Siskova crowned doubles champions
Earlier on Saturday, top seeds Magali Kempen from Belgium and Anna Siskova of the Czech Republic were crowned doubles champions after a thrilling final against second-seeded Madeleine Brooks from Great Britain and Eudice Chong of Hong Kong.
The match brought together the top two teams of the tournament. Kempen and Siskova stormed through the first set 6-2, showcasing aggressive net play and lightning-quick points. But Brooks and Chong struck back in the second, racing to a 3-0 lead and momentarily putting the favorites on the ropes.
Yet, Kempen and Siskova showed their class with a spirited comeback, taking six of the next seven games to win the set 6-3 and claim the 2025 ITF W100 Gran Canaria-Maspalomas doubles title without dropping a single set all week.
