Engel continues to delight home crowd
Justin Engel has quickly become a fan favorite at the Rothenbaum Tennis Complex. The 17-year-old German rising star stunned the crowd on Monday night with a sensational upset over Jan-Lennard Struff in singles, and followed it up on Tuesday with another memorable performance in doubles.
Teaming up with Max Hans Rehberg, Engel battled past US-American duo Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow 6-7, 6-4, 10-5 in front of a packed crowd on Court M2. The atmosphere reached a fever pitch in the deciding match tie-break, as the young German pair rallied to prevail after one hour and 36 minutes.
Now, Engel is set for the biggest test of his young career. On Wednesday, the wild card entry will step onto Center Court to face former champion Andrey Rublev, who lifted the Hamburg Open trophy in 2020.
