Yash Chaurasia Accepts 12-Month Tennis Anti-Doping Programme Suspension

LONDON, May 15, 2025 (ITIA Press Release)

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) today confirms that Indian tennis player Yash Chaurasia has accepted a 12-month suspension under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP).

Chaurasia, who reached a career-high world doubles ranking of 1355 in June 2023, tested positive for the prohibited substance terbutaline in November 2024. Terbutaline is prohibited under the TADP, in the category of Beta-2 Agonists (section S3 of the 2024 World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List).

Terbutaline is a Specified substance, and Chaurasia did not possess a valid TUE for the substance. While findings for Specified substances do not carry a mandatory provisional suspension during investigation, Chaurasia elected to take a voluntary provisional suspension on 22 January 2025.

Following interviews and correspondence with the ITIA, Chaurasia asserted that the positive sample resulted from consumption of the cough medicine Brozeet, which the player purchased over the counter from a pharmacy. The product lists terbutaline as an ingredient on the label. The player submitted receipts and photographs as evidence to support the explanation, and the ITIA accepted that the violation was not intentional.

In determining sanction, the ITIA considered the precedent set in similar cases under the World Anti-Doping Code across a number of sports, that the player consulted a reputable pharmacist in acquiring the medication, and that Brozeet is a commonly-used medication in Chaurasia’s country of origin.

As such, a finding of No Significant Fault or Negligence and a 12-month suspension was considered appropriate, and this was accepted by Chaurasia, who waived their right to a hearing before an independent tribunal.

Time served under provisional suspension is credited against the period of ineligibility. As such, Chaurasia’s suspension will end on 21 January 2026.

During the period of ineligibility, Chaurasia is prohibited from playing in, coaching at, or attending any tennis event authorised or sanctioned by the members of the ITIA (ATP, ITF, WTA, Tennis Australia, Fédération Française de Tennis, Wimbledon and USTA) or any national association.
