One of the most anticipated names on the entry list of the Piemonte Open Intesa Sanpaolo, Alexander Bublik lived up to expectations in his tournament debut at the Circolo della Stampa Sporting in Turin. Despite a rain delay that pushed the evening session well past 9 p.m., the former World No. 17 needed just one hour to dispatch an in-form Matteo Gigante 6-3, 6-1 under the lights on Campo Stadio.
The match began evenly, with both players holding serve through 3-3 in the opening set. However, the Kazakh star, known for his unpredictable and creative game style, quickly pulled away as the Italian struggled to find rhythm against Bublik’s varied shot-making. From that point on, Bublik dominated the match to secure his place in the second round, where he will face another Italian, Federico Arnaboldi, on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, Italy’s Federico Cinà also exited the tournament, falling 7-6, 6-4 to Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo, younger brother of ATP star Francisco Cerundolo. The 18-year-old from Palermo held his own throughout both sets—interrupted by a lengthy rain delay—but Cerundolo’s greater experience proved decisive in the key moments.
Wednesday Line-Up Packed with Local Talent and Big Names
Wednesday’s schedule at the Circolo della Stampa Sporting features the final seven matches of the first round, with several high-profile names and Italian hopes in action. Opening play on Campo Stadio will be Italian qualifier Giovanni Fonio against China’s Yunchaokete Bu, the tournament’s No. 7 seed. Later, veteran Fabio Fognini will take on Ukrainian Oleg Prihodko.
Defending champion Francesco Passaro returns to Turin at 5 p.m. to face Argentina’s Federico Agustin Gomez, followed by an evening clash between Italian rising star Luca Nardi and Mariano Navone of Argentina, scheduled not before 7 p.m.
Another Italian, Andrea Pellegrino, will aim to continue his strong form from qualifying when he meets No. 6 seed Daniel Altmaier of Germany on Court 4. Wednesday’s slate also includes the first doubles matches of the tournament.
