ESTORIL/STARNBERG, May 4, 2025
Rising US-American Alex Michelsen captured the biggest title of his career on Sunday by winning the 10th edition of the Millennium Estoril Open. The 20-year-old Californian, ranked World No. 38, defeated Italian qualifier Andrea Pellegrino 6-4, 6-4 in 74 minutes to secure his third ATP Challenger Tour title, his first title on clay.
Michelsen, a finalist at three ATP Tour events, didn’t drop a set all week en route to the crown. His triumph will see him climb to a career-high ranking of World No. 32, matching his best position achieved earlier this year in March.
The match followed a similar pattern in both sets: Michelsen broke serve in the fifth game, allowed Pellegrino to level, but pulled ahead again with a break in the seventh. The No. 2 seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 175 event showcased his aggressive all-court game, proving his attacking weapons were just as effective on clay. His serve was dominant throughout the tournament – he was broken only four times across his four victories.

With this win, Michelsen becomes the first US-American to lift the trophy at the Clube de Tenis do Estoril. He pocketed €34,900 in prize money as well as 175 ATP Ranking points. Michelsen also surpasses Stefanos Tsitsipas to become the youngest champion in the tournament’s 10-year history, clinching the title just 14 days younger than the Greek star when he won in 2019.
After a year hiatus from the ATP Tour, the Millennium Estoril Open will return as a 250 event next year.
