Cristian Garin is once again a champion. The 28-year-old Chilean clinched the 2025 Danube Upper Austria Open powered by SKE, defeating compatriot Tomas Barrios Vera 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a hard-fought final that lasted two hours and 31 minutes in Mauthausen, Austria. The victory marks Garin’s first title since winning his fifth ATP Tour career trophy on home soil in Santiago in March 2021 and propels him from No. 214 to No. 153 in the ATP Live Rankings, signaling an important step in his quest to return to the world’s elite.

A former World No. 17, Garin showcased his trademark resilience throughout the week and once again in Sunday’s final. After dropping the opening set, he rallied with powerful baseline play and improved serving to turn the match around—echoing his comeback performance in the semifinals against Roman Andres Burruchaga. The win extends Garin’s perfect record of career titles on clay and underscores his determination to revive his form in 2025 after a challenging period.

“I’m absolutely exhausted, but this victory means the world to me,” Garin shared after lifting the trophy. “Last year was mentally very tough—I barely played tournaments. This winter I promised myself to work harder, stay focused, and I’ve stuck to that. Today, I’m really proud.”

Reflecting on the final, Garin credited his opponent’s aggressive start: “Tomas came out really strong, and I struggled to get into the rallies early on. But I served better and gradually found my rhythm. Even though I missed a couple of key points and got nervous at the end, there’s so much I’m taking from this. For my comeback, this is a very important step—and with not many points to defend, today’s result helps a lot.”

The title adds another milestone to Garin’s clay-court résumé and fuels his push back toward the ATP’s top 100, as he eyes further breakthroughs in the coming months.
