After Gabriele Piraino’s win on the opening day of the main draw, Italy made it four out of four at Tenerife Challenger 1. From top seed Francesco Maestrelli to young Jacopo Vasamì, via Stefano Travaglia and Lorenzo Giustino, the Italians enjoyed a flawless day on the courts of the Abama Tennis Academy, host venue of the ATP Challenger 75 organized by MEF Tennis Events.
The day began with a dominant performance by Travaglia, who needed just 54 minutes to dismiss Sergey Fomin of Uzbekistan 6-3, 6-0, setting up an all-Italian second-round clash with Piraino. On the Abama Arena, top seed Maestrelli then took to the court for his first match since facing Novak Djokovic on Rod Laver Arena at the Australian Open in Melbourne. The Pisa native managed Frenchman Mathys Erhard well, winning 6-3, 7-6(4). On Court 5, Giustino was also flawless in the key moments, defeating Spanish qualifier Izan Almazan Valiente 7-6(2), 7-5.

Tie-break thriller for Vasamì
“I’m happy because I won a match that really tested the areas I worked on during preparation. Physically I’ve trained a lot and I could see those improvements today,” Vasamì smiled as he reflected on his 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 win over US-American Dali Blanch, a two-hour-and-35-minute battle that sent him into the second round of Tenerife Challenger 1. The 18-year-old Italian made the difference in the crucial moments, saving two break points at 5-5 in the third set.
Coached by Filippo Baldi, Vasamì claimed a win in his first official match of 2026. “We’ve only just started working together, but I’m happy. Today his experience as a former player helped me a lot. I’m also here with FITP fitness coach Nicolo Chiapperini, and I can say we’re doing the right things,” he said, also joking about the friends who came along after seeing photos of the venue. In the second round, Vasamì will face fifth-seeded Briton George Loffhagen, who defeated Belgium’s Gauthier Onclin 6-4, 6-2.
