Dalila Spiteri has claimed the biggest title of her professional tennis career by winning the AAT W50 edición TCA tournament, held on the clay courts of the Tenis Club Argentino in Buenos Aires.

The No. 3 seed from Italy defeated fifth-seeded Argentine Victoria Bosio 7-6(5), 6-3 in Sunday’s singles final. Spiteri won 62 per cent of her service points and broke her rival four times to seal victory in one hour and 58 minutes.

The 28-year-old World No. 333 battled her way into the championship match with wins over home favourites Lourdes Ayala and Luciana Moyana as well as Victoria Rodriguez from Mexico and Bulgarian Gergana Topalova.

“I’m very happy to have won my first big tournament. With the sun and the heat, I felt like I was at home. And the meat is very good too,” she said with a smile that matched the one she showed on court, trophy in hand,” Spiteri said and added about her game style:

“I have a one-handed backhand, which I really love. I enjoy playing with drop shots and slices. I try to have fun on the court — sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. For those who don’t know me, I’m a very fun person: I play the guitar and I like to enjoy myself. And when I’m enjoying myself, I play well.”

Spiteri captured her fifth career trophy on the ITF World Tennis Tour, her first at W50 level.
