Saturday’s play at the third edition of the Cadolzburg Open, an ITF World Tennis Tour M15 event, featured the singles semifinals and the doubles final. German qualifier Sydney Zick extended his remarkable run with a three-set victory over Poland’s Karol Filar to book a place in Sunday’s final, where he will face Daniel De Jonge in pursuit of his first singles title on the Pro Circuit.

Playing his sixth singles match of the week at the Tennis Center Schwadermühle, the 19-year-old Zick contested his first ITF World Tennis Tour semifinal against the experienced Karol Filar from Poland. After surviving an early scare in his opening service game, the Dachau native settled into the contest and matched his opponent shot for shot. With neither player able to convert break chances, the opening set was decided in a tiebreak, where Zick raced to a 4–0 lead and carried that momentum to claim the set.

Zick again appeared to be in control early in the second set but failed to capitalize on a break opportunity and briefly lost his rhythm, allowing the 27-year-old Filar to level the match. In the deciding set, however, the German teenager raised his level once more, breaking serve twice with aggressive returning before sealing a 7–6(5), 3–6, 6–1 victory after 1 hour and 46 minutes with a service winner on second serve.

“Both of us served very well, but we were a bit inconsistent on the return,” Zick reflected afterward. “From the baseline I felt slightly superior, but against such an experienced player who stays so calm, it’s always difficult. Toward the end I really improved my return game, and that made the difference.”

De Jonge prevails in power duel

In the first semifinal, spectators were treated to the expected fast-paced rallies as Dutchman Daniel De Jonge faced Danish Davis Cup player Oskar Poulsen. The match was dominated by booming serves and aggressive groundstrokes, yet it was De Jonge who applied the greater pressure throughout. Despite missing six break chances in the opening set, the 26-year-old took control of the tiebreak and converted a 4–0 lead to move ahead.

The pattern continued in the second set, with De Jonge holding serve comfortably and pushing Poulsen in return games. On his fifth break opportunity of the set, a well-placed return at Poulsen’s feet finally brought the decisive break, sealing a 7–6(3), 6–4 win in one hour and 43 minutes and sending De Jonge into his first ITF singles final.

“Even though there aren’t many carpet events, I’ve gained experience playing league matches in Germany and feel very comfortable on this surface,” said the former Pepperdine University standout. “I served well and played the rallies effectively, which took pressure off my own service games. Given Oskar’s recent results, I knew it would be a tough match, so I was happy to finish it with a break.”

Later in the day, De Jonge narrowly missed out on adding a doubles title to his weekend. Teaming up with US-American Billy Suarez, the Dutchman dominated the opening set against Karlis Ozolins and Piotr Pawlak.

The Latvian-Polish duo fought back strongly in the second set, saving two match points before forcing a tiebreak to level the contest. Riding that momentum, Ozolins and Pawlak edged a thrilling match tiebreak to claim the title 2–6, 7–6(6), 11–9 after 94 minutes.
