Bernabe Zapata Miralles has announced his retirement from professional tennis. The 28-year-old Spaniard shared his decision via social media, citing a lack of hunger and motivation to continue competing at the highest level. He explained that he is no longer willing to make “the same sacrifices” required to remain among the elite.

Zapata Miralles is considered as a true grinder of the sport. The Valencia native broke into the world’s top 50 and enjoyed the tournament of his life at Roland Garros 2022, reaching the round of 16 before falling to Alexander Zverev. He has captured four singles titles on the ATP Challenger Tour and nine singles titles on the ITF Pro Circuit, his last in May at the ITF World Tennis Tour M25 event in Mataro, Catalonia.

Zapata Miralles’ final professional match will take place at the Valencia Challenger in May. Until then, his heartfelt statement marks the end of the career of one of the most recognizable faces of Spanish tennis over the past decade.
