QUITO/STARNBERG, December 4, 2025

The WTA 125 Quito Copa Banco Guayaquil is beginning to reveal its strongest contenders, as five players secured their spots in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at the Quito Tenis & Golf Club.

The biggest news of the day came early: top seed and World No. 45 Tatjana Maria of Germany withdrew from the tournament due to a calf injury. After experiencing discomfort in her previous match against Irene Burillo, Maria had hoped to recover overnight, but the pain persisted and she was forced to pull out. Her withdrawal sends Ecuador’s Mell Reasco directly into the quarterfinals without taking the court.

Reasco, a left-hander, will face Argentina’s Luisina Giovannini on Friday. Giovannini delivered a strong performance to defeat sixth seed Maja Chwalinska 6–3, 6–4.

“I’m really happy, this is my first time reaching a WTA 125 quarterfinal,” said the 19-year-old Argentine. “Match by match I’ve adapted better. Now it’s time to enjoy the moment and make the most of this final tournament of the year.”

Another headline from Day 3 was the upset of second seed Oleksandra Oliynykova. The 96th-ranked Ukrainian fell 4–6, 6–3, 6–3 to Slovenia’s veteran and former World No. 35 Polona Hercog.

“It was a tough match. She’s a great player and comes in winning two tournaments,” said Hercog. “I lost to her recently in Colina, so this felt like a nice little revenge.”

The day’s results were rounded out by comfortable wins from Elvina Kalieva from the United States over Varvara Lepchenko and France’s Leolia Jeanjean, who overcame Sada Nahimana to advance.
