Luiza Fullana confirmed her outstanding form and lifted the singles trophy at the Sao Paulo Tennis Classic – Ano IV this Sunday at the Kosmos Clube in Mogi das Cruzes. The 24-year-old from Brasilia defeated Argentina’s Carla Markus in straight sets, 6–3, 6–3, securing the fourth professional title of her career – all won on Brazilian soil – and her second consecutive triumph after last week’s victory at the ITF World Tennis Tour W15 event in Criciuma.

With her title run, Fullana earns 15 WTA Ranking points and will rise to approximately World No. 573 on Monday, in addition to pocketing $2,160 in prize money. The Brazilian is enjoying her best season on clay, now holding a 22–13 record on the surface in 2025. To reach the final, she overcame four opponents, including top seed Thaisa Pedretti and Switzerland’s Marie Mettraux.

Having recently returned to training in Brasilia with the ADK/Play Tennis team, Fullana has rediscovered her aggressive style and demonstrated noticeable improvements in both her mental and tactical game — sustaining consistency and composure in key moments throughout the week.

Overcome with emotion, Fullana thanked the supporters who attended throughout the tournament, as well as coach Mario Mendonça, who accompanied her during the final.

“I think the combination of changes I made this year has really helped me. Returning to Brasília, being close to family and friends, training with people who have known me since the beginning, having that support network — it all gives me peace of mind and lets me work,” she said.

Coach Mendonça echoed her sentiment: “She has much greater clarity about the process — about what needs to be done daily and how results come in their own time. This is an important first step, and she’s taking it very well.”

While the week brought joy for Fullana, it was also marked by sadness for Markus. The Argentine reached the final despite suffering a personal loss: her grandfather passed away midweek, forcing her father – former World No. 36 Gabriel Markus – to return to Buenos Aires for the funeral. Still, Carla pushed on to finish runner-up.

Fullana and Pedretti Claim the Doubles Title

Fullana’s stellar week continued as she teamed up with Thaisa Pedretti to win the doubles title. The top-seeded pair captured the championship with a dominant 6–2, 6–0 victory over Najah Dawson and Marjorie Souza, sharing $930 in prize money and earning 15 WTA Doubles Ranking points.

For Fullana, it was a long-awaited milestone –  her first doubles trophy after four previous final losses. Pedretti, meanwhile, celebrated the 14th doubles title of her career.

“It feels amazing to win this tournament with Lu. Hopefully it’s the first of many. We’ve known each other since we were little, and ever since she joined the Tour we’ve clicked so well — we played interclub events together and now we’re here with this title. Thank you to everyone,” said Pedretti.
