HAMBURG/STARNBERG, October 22, 2025
German teenager Justin Engel made a successful debut at the Hamburg Ladies & Gents Cup on Wednesday. The No. 4 seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 50 indoor hard-court event edged past unranked Dutch qualifier Sander Jong 7-6(4), 7-6(10) in his first-round match without any breaks.
Engel withstood 15 aces from his opponent and won 53 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in one hour and 49 minutes.
“I just kept going and focused on the next point. Sander is a great player with an excellent serve,” Engel praised his opponent right after the end of what was a high-quality match from both players. “Somehow, I managed to pull through, and I’m really happy to be in the next round.”
Up next for the 18-year-old Nuremberg native will be German veteran Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, who booked his place in the second round against local wild card entry Niels McDonald on Tuesday.
