Home favourites Kaja Juvan and Dalila Jakupovic headlined Thursday’s second-round action at the WTA 125 Zavarovalnica Sava Ljubljana clay-court tournament held in the capital city of Slovenia. Juvan edged past Italy’s Giorgia Pedone, while Jakupovic had to concede defeat to Poland’s Maja Chwalinska.

Juvan started brilliantly and decisively – after only 19 minutes the first set was over. She won it 6-0, with her opponent taking just seven points. The second set lasted a bit longer, but Juvan closed it out 6-3. The entire match took 56 minutes.

“I controlled the whole match. A match can get tricky quickly, so I’m happy I was able to stay calm to the end. My opponent’s ball was slower than mine, which allowed me to make different choices. I felt very confident in all aspects of my game. It seemed to me that when I play well, I have an advantage in every element. I don’t know my quarterfinal opponent,” Juvan said after the match. The World No. 154 will face Hungary’s Amarissa Tóth in the quarterfinal.

Centre Court action opened with Jakupovic against the No. 8 seed Chwalinska. The Slovenian started excellently, breaking her opponent’s serve twice, but Chwalinska quickly replied with a re-break. The first set was ultimately decided in a tiebreak, which the Pole won 7-4. She was also more composed in the second set and, after one hour and 43 minutes, secured a place in the quarterfinal. The final score was 7-6(4), 6-2.

“The match was very tough, the court was a bit slower. I tried to play aggressively, but it was difficult. My opponent played with high balls, slices and drop shots. I had enough chances but didn’t take them today. Still, it’s good motivation for the next tournaments. The Pole is in good form right now, having won a WTA event last week. Of course I’m disappointed after the loss, but that’s tennis – in the end only one can win,” Jakupovic said.
