The 2025 edition of the ITF W100 DISA Gran Canaria-Maspalomas is officially underway, bringing top-tier women’s tennis to the sun-drenched clay courts of Club Conde Jackson Maspalomas in southern Gran Canaria.
A total of 32 players began the battle on Sunday for the eight coveted spots in the tournament’s main draw, showcasing impressive performances during the opening day of the qualifying rounds. The favorites lived up to expectations, with second-seeded Russian Ekaterina Ovcharenko cruising past local player Maria Mateos in dominant fashion, 6-1, 6-1.
One of the day’s most thrilling encounters featured Germany’s Carolin Raschdorf, who edged out Dutch teenager Rose Marie Nijkamp 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in a marathon match lasting nearly two and a half hours. Spain’s only qualifier to advance on the day, Claudia Hoste Ferrer, rallied from a set down to defeat Denmark’s Olivia Gram 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a tense three-set battle.
Also booking their places in the final round of qualifying were Dutch players Demi Tran and Joy de Zeeuw, US-American Kate Mansfield, Italians Jessica Bertoldo and Verena Meliss, as well as German trio Angelina Wirges, Gina Marie Dittmann, and Emily Seibold. Romanian Eva Maria Ionescu and China’s Tianmi Mi also advanced to the next stage.
