“Perhaps the stringing made the difference?” asked a relaxed organizer Marc Raffel during the award ceremony to the newly crowned Kirschbaum International champion, Michael Agwi. The question had its basis in the fact that the 20-year-old from Berlin, who represents Ireland, plays with the Flash model from the tournament’s sponsor, Kirschbaum.

In front of nearly 200 spectators at the TeReMeer Sport & Tennis Resort Meerbusch, Agwi defeated home favourite John Sperle from Cologne 7-5, 6-1, climbing over 100 spots in the ATP Rankings to break into the Top 600. The victory in Sunday’s final was well-deserved, as Agwi applied immense pressure with his serve and groundstrokes. Sperle found himself too often in the defensive, only able to react. The World No. 692 struck six aces and capitalized on three of his four break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 15 minutes.

Agwi didn’t drop a set during the week in Meerbusch, Germany. He defeated Dutchman Sander Jong, Jakub Filip from the Czech Republic, Aleksandr Braynin of the Ukraine and Alec Deckers from the Netherlands en route to the title of the ITF World Tennis Tour M15 event.

Agwi claimed his second career title on the ITF World Tennis Tour following his maiden triumph at the TennisBase Oberhaching in southern Germany in mid-February.
