The top two seeds at the Republica Dominicana Open – Copa Cap Cana saw their title hopes come to an end in Friday’s quarterfinals, as a pair of impressive performances from their opponents shook up the draw and opened the door for new contenders heading into the final stages of the ATP Challenger Tour 175 hard-court tournament in the Caribbean.
Adam Walton rallied from a set down to outlast No. 1 seed Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. The eighth-seeded Australian withstood eight aces and broke his opponent’s serve six times to prevail after two hours and four minutes.
World No. 91 Walton will next take on Mattia Bellucci, who eased past fourth-seeded Belgian Raphael Collignon 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 26 minutes.
In the bottom half of the draw, Mariano Navone knocked off No. 2 seed Valentin Royer of France 6-2, 7-6(5). The sixth favourite from Argentina converted four of his eight break-point opportunities and won 54 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and 57 minutes.
Up next for Navone will be Alexander Blockx. The 20-year-old Belgian fought past lucky loser Coleman Wong from Hong Kong 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. The encounter lasted two hours and 30 minutes.
