Australian rising tennis star Talia Gibson has sensationally cracked the world’s top 100 for the first time in her career following two stunning upset victories over world No. 11 Ekaterina Alexandrova and No. 16 Clara Tauson at Indian Wells.

Gibson’s performances see her reach the round of 16 at the prestigious Californian tournament and climb up the live WTA Rankings to 85 – marking a pivotal moment in the highly talented Aussie’s career as she secures automatic entry into the world’s four Grand Slams.

Gibson said she was “filled with so much joy” after achieving the milestone.

“It’s been a goal of mine for so long and I feel like I’ve been pretty close in the rankings for quite a while now. To be able to do it so early on in the year was so unexpected. It feels really amazing,” Gibson said.

“I’ve really been working hard to keep trying to improve the consistency around my level and implement a bit more variety. I’m really happy with how my game’s developing.”

The power-hitting West Australian impressively overpowered Alexandrova in straight sets 6-3 7-5 on Saturday. She then backed up the performance to overcome 28 aces against Denmark’s Tauson in a three-set thriller on Monday 7-6(2) 4-6 6-4 – in a statement that showcases the incredible developing talent in Australian women’s tennis on the international stage.

She will face Italian and world No. 7 Jasmine Paolini for a spot in the quarter finals on Wednesday morning Australian time.

Gibson joins Maya Joint as the second young Australian to enter the women’s top 100 in the space of 12 months. The duo is closely followed by two additional rising Australian talents – 20-year-old Taylah Preston and former junior world no.1 and 17-year-old Emerson Jones.

“We have so many amazing players and young girls coming through. Everyone’s extremely supportive of each other. We’re able to all get confidence from each other’s successes. I think that plays a really big part in why everyone’s doing so well,” Gibson said.

The victories are Gibson’s first two top 20 scalps and mark her career best performance at WTA 1000 level. It follows a successful start to 2026, which includes a second-round appearance at the Australian Open and winning the ITF W75 Brisbane title in February.
