BRASILIA/STARNBERG, March 3, 2026
Brazil enjoyed a standout opening day in the main draw — and the final round of qualifying — at the inaugural Brasilia Tennis Open, an ATP Challenger 75 event played on clay at the Iate Clube de Brasilia with total prize money of $107,000.
Gustavo Heide produced one of the biggest wins of the day by upsetting seventh seed Daniel Elahi Galan of Colombia, currently ranked No. 180 and a former top-60 player. Heide battled for nearly three hours to secure a dramatic 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(3) victory. He even served for the match at 5-4 in the third set but was broken before regaining control in the decisive tie-break.
The match ended in spectacular fashion. After Heide lobbed his opponent, Galan responded with a tweener. Heide reacted quickly at the net, finishing the point with a reflex volley that clipped the opponent’s side of the court and spun back over — sealing the win in unforgettable style.
Gustavo Heide estreia com vitória em Brasília. O paulista de 24 anos e 301º do ranking superou o colombiano Daniel Galan, cabeça 7, por 6/1, 4/6 e 7/6 (7-3).

“I’ll have to watch that match point again,” Heide said. “He hit an incredible shot, and I just stretched my arm out on instinct. I’m not even sure how it ended — I think it caught the frame. We’ll have to see.”
Heide also highlighted his improved mental strength: “I’ve been working hard on my mental game. Last year, if I’d been broken while serving for the match, I might have dropped my energy and lost. This time I stayed in it. The match wasn’t over — it was just level again. That made the difference.”
With the victory, Brazil is guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals, as Heide’s next opponent will be either Igor Marcondes or Pedro Sakamoto, who advanced through qualifying.
Joao Lucas Reis, ranked No. 208 and the highest-ranked Brazilian in the draw, also progressed with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over Chile’s Matias Soto. He will now face rising Bolivian talent Juan Prado Angelo.
“I felt in control for most of the match,” Reis said. “He raised his level late in the second set and made very few mistakes. Conditions here can be tricky, but I’m happy I stayed persistent in the third set and managed to convert the break.”
Three More Brazilians Advance Through Qualifying
Brazil added three more players from qualifying, bringing the total number of home competitors in the 32-player main draw to eleven.
Pedro Sakamoto defeated local player Luis Felipe Miguel 7-6(4), 6-3 and will now face Igor Marcondes in an all-Brazilian clash.
“It was a tough match,” Sakamoto said. “Even though he doesn’t live here, he’s very used to the conditions and had strong crowd support. I tried to stay focused from the start and avoid giving him chances on my serve. The tournament is strong, so I’ll take it day by day. I’m feeling good physically and very focused.”
Eduardo Ribeiro beat US-American Nicolas Moreno 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 and will meet Uruguay’s Franco Roncadelli in the main draw. Joao Schiessl eased past Chile’s Nicolas Villaron 6-2, 6-2 to set up a first-round match against Felipe Meligeni.
