QUITO/STARNBERG, December 3, 2025

Day 2 of the WTA 125 Quito Copa Banco Guayaquil delivered drama, resilience, and emotional triumphs. Ecuador’s Mell Reasco earned a stirring victory, while compatriot Camila Romero saw a near-certain win slip away. Top seed Tatjana Maria also moved into the next round, but not without significant resistance.

Reasco produced one of the most memorable performances of the tournament so far, defeating Ukraine’s Valeriya Strakhova 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 in a gripping battle.

“I’m very happy to have won in front of my family. I think that’s what helped me keep going when I was down in the second set. I wanted to give my best for them, and I managed to pull through,” she said afterward. Her family – including her father Neicer and brother Djorkaef Reasco, both well-known figures in Ecuadorian football – cheered her on from the stands.

The left-handed Ecuadorian ranked World No. 575, currently working this week with coach Edgard Machado, will now face World No. 45 Tatjana Maria on Thursday. The German, a four-time WTA Tour champion and Wimbledon semifinalist, overcame Spain’s Irene Burillo 6-1, 6-7(6), 6-4. “This tournament is a chance to keep improving. Playing someone with so much experience is something I’ll take positively. I’m going to fight for every point and compare my level to see what I need to work on,” said Reasco.

Romero, meanwhile, came close to victory against Russia’s Anastasia Zolotareva. Up 6-3, 4-1 with a break in hand, she was unable to maintain her momentum as nerves crept in. Zolotareva rallied strongly to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
