BOLOGNA/STARNBERG, November 18, 2025
Carlos Alcaraz will not be able to join the Spanish MAPFRE national tennis team for the 2025 Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna, starting this Thursday. The World No. 1 has been ruled out due to physical discomfort in the back of his right thigh suffered during last week’s ATP Finals in Turin.
Alcaraz traveled by car to Bologna on Monday afternoon to join the Spanish team but immediately underwent medical tests upon arrival. The results revealed a significant muscular overload with a marked edema in the right hamstring.
“I’m very sorry to announce that I won’t be able to play the Davis Cup with Spain in Bologna. I have an edema in the hamstring of my right leg, and the medical recommendation is not to compete. I’ve always said that playing for Spain is the greatest honor, and I was really excited to help fight for the trophy. I’m going home heartbroken,” the Murcia native explained.
Alcaraz will return to Spain on Tuesday, leaving captain David Ferrer with a team composed of Jaume Munar, Pablo Carreno Busta, Pedro Martinez Portero, and Marcel Granollers for Thursday’s quarterfinal against Czechia.
The winner will face either Argentina or Germany in the semifinals. In the top half of the draw, host nation and defending two-time champion Italy will take on Austria, while France opens the competition against Belgium on Tuesday.
