Federico Gomez of Argentina and Tomas Barrios of Chile, last year’s finalists at the Challenger Ciudad de Guayaquil – Copa Banco Guayaquil, sponsored by the Municipality of Guayaquil, are set to return for another shot at glory. The prestigious Ecuadorian and South American event will celebrate its 21st consecutive edition, taking place from November 17 to 23 at the Guayaquil Tenis Club – Anexo venue.

Tennis fans still remember the powerful and creative play showcased by Gómez and Barrios during the thrilling 2024 final, which drew a packed crowd at the Guayaquil Tenis Club.

Gomez, currently ranked World No. 208, is a three-time Challenger champion, all in finals he has contested, and reached a career-high of No. 133 earlier this year. The Argentine is determined to defend his title and claim back-to-back victories in Guayaquil. His rival Barrios, ranked No. 117, boasts six Challenger titles, including two this season, and reached a career-best ranking of No. 93 last year. The Chilean’s goal is clear: to return to the Top 100 and secure direct entry into the 2026 Australian Open.

Adding further depth to the main draw is Juan Pablo Ficovich (No. 164, Argentina), a three-time Challenger winner who reached two finals this season, and Juan Pablo Varillas (No. 320, Peru), a former World No. 60 in 2023 and seven-time Challenger champion, including one title this year in Buenos Aires.

Davis Cup Players from Ecuador and Beyond

This 21st edition will feature several Davis Cup representatives from across the globe. For Ecuador, Alvaro Guillen and Andres Andrade – the nation’s top singles players – headline the local contingent after their decisive performances in Ecuador’s recent victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, which secured a spot in next year’s Qualifiers.

Other Davis Cup competitors joining the field include Adolfo Vallejo (Paraguay), Hady Habib (Lebanon), Rodrigo Pacheco and Alex Hernández (Mexico), Gonzalo Bueno (Peru), Murkel Dellien (Bolivia), as well as Franco Roncadelli (Uruguay) – a mix of talented young prospects and seasoned professionals eager to battle for the title.

Eleven Nations Represented

The main draw currently features 22 confirmed players from 11 countries: Spain, Lebanon, the United States, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Ecuador.
Among them is Emilio Camacho, Ecuador’s top junior (No. 51 ITF), who received a wild card entry into the main draw.

The full 32-player singles draw will be completed with six qualifiers, two additional wild cards, and potentially two special exemptions.

As the Guayaquil Challenger enters its 21st year of uninterrupted competition, the event continues to stand as a symbol of excellence and tradition in South American tennis—where established stars and rising talents meet to write the next chapter of the sport’s future.
