Taylor Fritz scored his first-ever victory over Carlos Alcaraz, and his maiden win against a current World No. 1, to cap off a flawless Saturday for Team World at the Laver Cup in San Francisco.

In a commanding 6-3, 6-2 performance, the US-American unleashed his trademark power, dominating from the baseline and relentlessly pressuring the Spaniard with aggressive forays to the net.

“I knew what I had to do,” said Fritz. “The question was if I was going to be able to do it. The three times I had played Carlos, he had broken me in the first game every time. Getting out of that first game was huge. I just made sure I didn’t second guess myself.”

“It’s such an amazing moment,” he added. “But what really does it for me is not the win itself, it’s how I played. It’s the level. It’s taking advantage of those big moments, pulling the trigger, just going out and taking it. I’m hoping this can be a sign of things to come.”

Fritz’s victory extended Team World’s lead to 7-3 in the race to 13 points, with each Saturday match worth two. Earlier, Alex de Minaur toppled Alexander Zverev, and Francisco Cerundolo defeated Holger Rune to add to the momentum.

Alex de Minaur and Alex Michelsen completed the Saturday sweep for Team World with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Holger Rune and Casper Ruud, stretching the lead for Team World to 9-3.
