BAD WALTERSDORF, September 19, 2025
Friday’s quarterfinals at the LAYJET Open served up a mix of routine wins and dramatic twists, producing an intriguing semifinal line-up at the ATP Challenger Tour 125 clay-court event at Bad Waltersdorf in Styria, Austria.
In the day’s opening match, Czech qualifier Zdenek Kolar continued his inspired run with a commanding 6–0, 6–4 victory over No.8 seed Roman Andres Burruchaga of Argentina. World No. 270 Kolar raced through the first set in just 22 minutes, breaking at will. Burruchaga, the World No. 146, steadied in the second set and offered more resistance, but after one hour and 27 minutes Kolar sealed his place in the semifinals.
The second quarterfinal saw Jan Choinski extend his fine form in Austria. The British player, born in Koblenz and coached by Günter Bresnik, upset Italian Francesco Passaro 7–6, 6–3. Ranked No.227, Choinski kept his composure in a tight first-set tiebreak before pulling away in the second to reach the last four at the Challenger as an unseeded player.
The most dramatic match of the day came in the third quarterfinal, where second seed Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic battled past fifth seed Pablo Carreno Busta 6–2, 0–6, 6–1. Kopriva, ranked No.102, raced to a 5–0 lead in the opening set only to lose all momentum and the second set to love against the former world No.10. But the 26-year-old regrouped brilliantly, breaking early in the decider and dominating again to close out the match after 110 minutes.
