Seventeen-year-old Justin Engel is one of the brightest young talents in world tennis. This week in Tokyo, the Nuremberg native has joined the German Davis Cup team for the first time in his career. In an interview with the German Tennis Federation (DTB), Engel reflected on the moment he was called up by captain Michael Kohlmann, his goals for the week, and Germany’s upcoming opponent Japan.

“It was an incredible moment for me when I got the call and at first, I couldn’t really believe it,” Engel said about his nomination. “With this, a dream has come true. I always wanted to play for Germany. Even in juniors, I really enjoyed representing my country. These moments in a team are always something very special in a sport like tennis.”

At just 17, Engel could become the second-youngest German player in Davis Cup history. “Of course, it’s something special to be here at such a young age and it shows that the hard work is already paying off,” he said. “But for me, the most important thing is simply to be here and to give my best for the team. Records are nice, but what matters most is that we are successful together.”

As he prepares for a possible debut, Engel is focused on gaining valuable experience. “I want to soak up the atmosphere, learn from the experienced players, and be ready when I’m needed,” he said. “For me, this is an experience that will help me grow personally as well. I want to enjoy it, cheer for the team, and see what it feels like to be part of the Davis Cup. At the same time, I want to give everything, represent my country in the best possible way, and enjoy this special moment.”

The teenager is also pleased with his recent progress on tour. “Last week I reached my first semifinal at a Challenger tournament in France. Right now, I’m really satisfied with my game. I’m in top shape, I feel good on court, and I’m also mentally fresh. Hopefully it can continue like this,” Engel explained.

Looking ahead to the tie against Japan, Engel expects a tough challenge. “Of course, everyone who follows tennis knows Kei Nishikori, their number one. He’s a legend here in Japan, although I believe it’s not yet certain whether he will actually play,” Engel said.

“Overall, the Japanese have many players just outside the Top 100 who have the potential to break into the top level. They are difficult opponents because they always stay positive and have a very high playing quality.”
