SEVILLA, September 4, 2025
2014 champion Pablo Carreno Busta, one of the top contenders for the title at the 62nd edition of the Copa Sevilla, secured his spot in the quarterfinals of the ATP Challenger Tour 125 clay-court event on Wednesday at the Real Club de Tenis Betis. The former World No. 10 defeated fellow Spaniard Javi Barranco Cosano 6-3, 6-2.
After a tight start, level at 3-3 in the first set, Carreno Busta shifted gears from the baseline and reeled off seven games in a row, racing to a 4-0 lead in the second set before calmly closing out the match in one hour and 26 minutes. His victory also ended the run of wild card entry Barranco Casano, the last remaining Andalusian in the main draw.
In the next round, Carreno Busta will next face Dusan Lajovic. The No. 4 seed from Serbia overcame Portugal’s Frederico Ferreira Silva with a solid 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 41 minutes, breaking serve once in each set.
“I controlled the match from the beginning until the end and served well in the important moments,” Lajovic told Tennis TourTalk afterwards. “I was also solid from the baseline and was able to step up when it mattered. I was able to bring in the intensity and played a little bit faster. This was probably the biggest difference today.”
The day also saw the emergence of Peruvian rising star Ignacio “Nacho” Buse, who thrilled the crowd at the Real Club de Tenis Betis with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 win over home favorite Pablo Llamas from Jerez. The 18-year-old sealed the victory in just over an hour, producing several dazzling points to set up an enticing quarterfinal against Carlos Taberner.
Second seed Taberner had a more straightforward path than in his opening match against Alex Martínez, as Dutch opponent Guy Den Ouden was forced to retire injured midway through the second set after losing the opener 6-3.
In other action, Vilius Gaubas of Lithuania mounted a comeback against Czech Jonas Forejtek, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4, and will meet Argentina’s Genaro Olivieri, who also turned things around after losing the first set to Portugal’s Henrique Rocha, rallying 0-6-6, 7-5, 6-2.
In an all-Spanish battle between two qualifiers, David Jorda defeated Carlos Lopez Montagud 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, setting up a quarterfinal showdown with Madrid’s Daniel Merida, who upset Portuguese third seed Jaime Faria in three sets.
