BONN/STARNBERG, August 9, 2025
The second edition of the Bonn Open will crown its champion on Sunday, with Jurij Rodionov and Timofey Skatov battling for the title of the ATP Challenger Tour 75 event. In Saturday’s semifinals, unseeded Skatov knocked out No. 2 seed Raphael Collignon, while Rodionov came from behind to win an all-Austrian clash against rising star Joel Schwaerzler.
In the longest match of the tournament at two hours and 49 minutes, Skatov edged Collignon 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. After the Belgian favorite leveled the contest and earned two early break points in the deciding set, the momentum seemed firmly in Collignon’s favor. However, Skatov saved both chances, broke serve at 6-5, and closed out the match. On Sunday, the Kazakh will be bidding for his third ATP Challenger Tour title and a return to the Top 250.
Rodionov will be his opponent after overturning a poor start against compatriot Schwaerzler. “After the first set I knew I had to change something in my game,” the 26-year-old recalled in his post-match interview. Following a one-sided 1-6 opening set, the Nuremberg-born Austrian roared back, using his powerful serve to dictate play. He sealed a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory, denying Schwaerzler what would have been the best ranking of his career.
Veldheer/Oberleitner triumph in doubles
In doubles, Tim Rühl and Patrick Zahraj suffered an agonizing defeat in the final against fourth seeds Mick Veldheer of the Netherlands and Neil Oberleitner of Austria. Leading 6-5 in the second set, the German duo held two match points on serve but failed to convert, losing the ensuing tiebreak. In the match tiebreak, Rühl and Zahraj squandered three more match points at 9-7 before falling 4-6, 7-6(3), 12-10.
