BONN/STARNBERG, August 6, 2025
The fourth day of main draw action at the 2025 Bonn Open brought disappointment for German players in the singles draw, while the doubles competition delivered unexpected home-crowd celebrations.
German hopes in the singles draw of the ATP Challenger Tour 75 clay-court event were dashed as both Mats Rosenkranz and Jamie Mackenzie fell in the second round.
Rosenkranz, who entered the main draw as a lucky loser and impressed in his opening match against Clement Tabur, could not replicate that form against Argentina’s Lautaro Midon. The 26-year-old from Essen struggled to force errors from the consistent Midon and was eliminated in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Later in the day, 17-year-old Jamie Mackenzie, riding high from his first-ever Challenger main draw victory on Monday, faced Austria’s experienced Jurij Rodionov. Despite showing poise beyond his years and continuing to play with confidence, Mackenzie was ultimately outclassed 6-3, 6-4.
Another major upset saw third seed Elmer Moller fall to Bulgarian qualifier Yanaki Milev. The World No. 105 was expected to cruise into the quarterfinals, but Milev, ranked over 700 spots lower, played fearless tennis to win 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 in over two hours.
Doubles: German Duos Deliver Surprise Wins
While singles results were disappointing, German players thrilled fans in the doubles draw, which began on Wednesday.
Wildcard duo Tom Zeuch and Jannik Opitz pushed the third-seeded pair of Christoph Negritu and Alexander Merino to the limit on Center Court, ultimately losing 6-7(3), 6-3, 10-6 in a close match tiebreak.
But the real shock came on Court 2, where German wildcards Tim Ruehl and Patrick Zahraj stunned the top-seeded French pair Theo Arribage and Luca Sanchez 6-3, 7-6(2).
Inspired by that energy, German youngsters Niels McDonald and Max Schönhaus delivered another upset shortly afterward, defeating Serbian twins Ivan and Matej Sabanov 7-6(2), 6-3 to cap off a memorable day for the local doubles teams.
