Lithuanian Edas Butvilas and Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles booked their places in the semifinals of the 38th edition of the BDO Tenis Playa Luanco on Tuesday, defeating Pedro Cachin and Miguel Avendaño respectively in two tightly contested matches.

Butvilas came out on top against Avendaño with a 3-6, 6-2, 11-9 victory, edging the Spaniard in a dramatic match tiebreak. Zapata Miralles, meanwhile, overcame Argentine and 2023 finalist Cachin with a 6-4, 7-2 win.

Two Close-Fought Contests

In the first match of the day, Avendaño struck first, breaking the Lithuanian’s serve in the sixth game to take the opening set 6-3 in just 35 minutes. Butvilas responded strongly after the changeover, dominating the second set with an early break and sealing it 6-2 with a second late break to force a decisive super tiebreak. There, he edged out Avendaño 11-9 to secure his spot in the semifinals.

The second encounter saw tournament returnee Zapata Miralles take on last year’s runner-up, Pedro Cachin. The Argentine started well, but Zapata Miralles grew into the match, clawing back an early break to win the opening set 6-4.

The second set remained balanced, pushing the match into a tiebreak. Zapata, playing with precision and aggression, quickly pulled ahead and closed it out 7-2 to earn a semifinal berth against former US Open champion Dominic Thiem.
