The first main draw day of the Generali Open 2025 kicked off under challenging conditions, as persistent rain caused delays and initially dictated the pace on the courts of Kitzbühel. But just in time for the much-anticipated debut of Austria’s rising star Joel Schwaerzler, the clouds parted and the sun emerged, setting the stage for an atmospheric evening of tennis.

Schwaerzler faced a tough opening challenge against Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics, the tournament’s No. 8 seed. Despite a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 loss, the 18-year-old impressed the home crowd by securing his first-ever set win in the main draw of an ATP Tour event. “I wasn’t far off. I got impatient, that’s why I lost,” Schwaerzler reflected after the match. “But there were a lot of positives. I played more aggressively than in recent months. I’m heading in the right direction.”

Earlier in the day on Center Court, Argentina’s Francisco Comesana lived up to expectations. The No. 7 seed, who stunned Alexander Zverev earlier this year in Rio, showed composure and confidence in a 6-3, 7-6(1) victory over American qualifier Tristan Boyer.

Meanwhile, over on Court Küchenmeister, Alexander Shevchenko thrilled the crowd with a hard-fought comeback win. The 24-year-old from Kazakhstan, who lived in Vienna from the age of nine and was recently coached by Austrian Günter Bresnik, battled back from a set down to defeat Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
