Spain’s Iñaki Montes de la Torre and China’s Fajing Sun captured the doubles title at the Open Ciudad de Pozoblanco, defeating the Bulgarian-Israeli duo of Anthony Genov and Roy Stepanov 6-1, 7-6(8) in a final on Saturday evening that lasted one hour and 26 minutes.

The win marks the first doubles title for a Spanish player at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Pozoblanco since Marcel Granollers and his brother Gerard triumphed in 2010. Only three Spanish pairings have achieved the feat in the tournament’s history: Fernando Vicente and Santi Ventura (2007), the Granollers brothers (2010), and now Montes de la Torre.

For Sun, the victory could be just the beginning of a historic weekend, as he is set to contest the singles final on Sunday against Daniel Mérida. If he wins, he would become only the second player to complete the singles-doubles double in Pozoblanco, matching Uzbekistan’s Oleg Ogorodov, who accomplished the feat in 1999.

Dominant Opening, Dramatic Finish

The final was a tale of two sets. Montes and Sun stormed through the first set in just 27 minutes, dominating on serve and return alike. The stats underlined their authority: they dropped just three points on serve, allowed only eight on return, converted two of four break points, and won 100 per cent of their first-service points. The 6-1 scoreline was a reflection of their complete control, having broken serve in the opening game and never looking back.

The second set, however, was a much closer affair. Genov and Stepanov bounced back with renewed confidence after surviving a tight first game. They saved multiple break points, two at 3-3 and another at 5-5, and even had a chance to break for a 5-3 lead.

It all came down to a tense, seesawing tiebreak in which the Bulgarian-Israeli team held a set point to force a deciding super tiebreak. But Montes and Sun held their nerve, saving that chance and capitalizing on their third match point to close out the victory.

With the win, the Spanish-Chinese pair earns 75 ATP Ranking points and split €4,540 in prize money. The runners-up take home €2,630 and 50 Ranking points.
