Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion and four-time Olympic gold medalist Venus Williams will compete in the Mubadala Citi DC Open. The 45-year-old American tennis icon has accepted a main draw wild card into the event, which will take place July 19-27 at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park.

The Mubadala Citi DC Open is the only combined ATP-WTA 500-series tournament on the pro tennis calendar. This year’s field features nine Top-10 players, six Grand Slam champions, five former DC Open champions and 17 Americans, including the top nine U.S. men.

“I’m excited to accept a wild card to the Mubadala Citi DC Open. There’s something truly special about DC: the energy, the fans, the history,” said Willams in a statement. “This city has always shown me so much love, and I can’t wait to compete there again.”

For more than four decades, Williams has transcended tennis. Her lasting legacy includes: 49 career singles titles and 22 doubles titles, including seven Grand Slam singles titles, 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, and two in mixed doubles. Her Grand Slam singles victories include five Wimbledon titles and two US Open titles.

Williams is also a four-time Olympic gold medalist, in the 2000, 2008, and 2012 Olympic Games. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, she became only the second player in history to win gold in both singles and doubles at the same Olympics.

This will be Williams’s second time competing in the DC Open – and first since 2022, when she lost to Rebecca Marino of Canada, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. She last competed in a WTA Tour event at the Miami Open in March 2024 and has been inactive since.

“We are so excited that Venus will be playing in the Mubadala Citi DC Open this year,” said Mark Ein, Mubadala Citi DC Open Chairman, in a statement. “She has inspired people around the world with her accomplishments on the court and her visionary impact off the court. I know how much it means to our D.C. fans and community to be able to watch her compete in person this summer.”
