Pozoblanco Set To Host 30th Edition Of Its Prestigious ATP Challenger Tournament

Open Ciudad de Pozoblanco

POZOBLANCO/STARNBERG, July 11, 2025

The province of Córdoba will once again take center stage in Spanish tennis from July 13 to 20, 2025, with the celebration of the 30th edition of the Open Ciudad de Pozoblanco Covap – Memorial Fabián Dorado. The international event was officially presented at the very venue where it will take place, the Polideportivo Municipal de Pozoblanco.

This long-standing tournament, part of the ATP Challenger Tour, will once again welcome some of the best players from around the world. Over the years, it has seen participation from former World No. 1s, Grand Slam champions and finalists, Davis Cup winners, and leading figures of Spanish tennis. Past champions include renowned names such as Roberto Bautista Agut, Marcos Baghdatis, Jarkko Nieminen, Rubén Ramírez Hidalgo, and Stefano Pescosolido.

To mark its 30th anniversary, the tournament steps up in category, becoming an ATP Challenger 75, with prize money increased to $100,000 plus hospitality.

Tournament director Marcos García expressed his pride in elevating the event’s status once more: “Since we brought the tournament back, I’ve been clear about where I wanted it to go. This year, we’re once again a $100,000 Challenger with hospitality included. We’re proud to see the Open de Pozoblanco back among the best.”

That pride is shared by Santiago Cabello, Mayor of Pozoblanco, who emphasized the dedication of those who have made this success possible: “We’ve proven that our town, our people, and our region have the capacity to organize top-level events. What began as a dream is now a reality. We’re especially proud to unveil a fifth court this year, a testament to our commitment to growing this tournament.”

Gabriel Duque, Provincial Delegate for Culture, echoed the sentiment: “Having a tournament of this caliber in our region is a great source of pride.” Likewise, Edu Lucena, Delegate for Tourism, Culture, and Sport in Córdoba, remarked that Pozoblanco this week becomes “a reflection of the best of Andalusia.”

The official presentation, held at the tournament venue, featured a strong lineup of dignitaries and stakeholders, including Mayor Santiago Cabello, Eduardo Lucena of the Andalusian Government, Gabriel Duque of the Córdoba Provincial Council, Antonio Rabasco, Vice President of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET), Agustín Cantero, Sports Councilor of Pozoblanco, José María Calero from Covap, and tournament director Marcos García, along with representatives from key sponsors such as BMW San Rafael Motor, Perfil Peninsular, and Cajasur.

A High-Level Player Field

This year’s tournament will host players from more than 20 countries, including 2023 champion Hugo Grenier, last year’s finalist Antoine Escoffier, and well-known names such as Mikhail Kukushkin, Alejandro Moro, and Johannus Monday. A strong contingent of rising Spanish talents—the backbone of the “Armada”—will also be competing, many of whom are seen as future stars.

All will aim to follow in the footsteps of August Holmgren, the Danish player who won the most recent edition and recently impressed with his performance at Wimbledon.
