GUAYAQUIL, June 20, 2025
Guayaquil is preparing for a historic and emotional showdown between two of South America’s tennis greats, as Ecuador’s Nicolas Lapentti and Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro are set to face off on Saturday, July 19, 2025. The match, held at the Guayaquil Tenis Club (Anexo), will begin at 7:30 PM and is part of the celebrations for Guayaquil Capital Americana del Deporte 2026, presented by American Express Banco Guayaquil.
Both Lapentti and Del Potro are icons of Latin American tennis, not just for their remarkable achievements on court, but also for their charisma and the deep admiration they inspire across the region.
Lapentti, a former World No. 6, won five ATP titles and played the prestigious ATP Masters in 1999. He twice helped Ecuador reach the World Group in Davis Cup competition and still holds the world record for most five-set singles victories (13) in Davis Cup history.
“This time I’m coming back to play, and I’ll be doing it with a great friend, Juan Martin Del Potro,” said Lapentti. “Without a doubt, he’s one of the best players the world has seen, a Davis Cup champion and someone who elevated South American tennis to another level. He’s a great person and friend, and we’re going to enjoy some amazing days together here in our city.”
Del Potro’s legendary status was cemented when he defeated Roger Federer in the 2009 US Open final. A former World No. 3, he captured 22 ATP titles, won the Davis Cup with Argentina in 2016, and earned Olympic bronze in London 2012 and silver in Rio 2016.
In a video message shown at the press conference, Del Potro confirmed his participation: “Hi Nico, great to greet you. Hello Guayaquil, Ecuador! I’m excited to tell you that I’ll be in Guayaquil on July 19 for a match with Nico and some other activities. I’m really looking forward to returning to Ecuador—the last time I was there was for a Challenger event many years ago. I’m thrilled to be back and share some spectacular days with all of you.”
A Legendary Guest: Guga Kuerten
Adding even more prestige to the event, Brazilian tennis legend Gustavo “Guga” Kuerten will attend as a special guest. The three-time Roland Garros champion confirmed his presence in a video message played during the press event.
