BAD RAPPENAU, June 2, 2025

Defending champion Sumit Nagal kicked off his campaign at this year’s Neckarcup in Bad Rappenau on Monday, aiming to make history once again. The Indian player, who claimed the title at the prestigious ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event in Heilbronn last year, is now targeting a second triumph – a feat only achieved by Filip Krajinovic in the tournament’s history.

Nagal began his title defense with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over German wildcard entry Tom Gentzsch in one hour and 27 minutes. “It was quite a tough match at the beginning. But I’m happy to be back here,” said Nagal, who is seeded seventh this year, sounding satisfied with his performance.

When asked whether he had ever successfully defended a title before, Nagal paused before replying: “No, but of course I’ll try my best!”

With the first step complete, the 27-year-old now faces rising Mexican star Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez in the second round.

Earlier in the day, the final round of qualifying was completed. Alexey Vatutin of Russia, Rei Sakamoto from Japan, and Germans Max Wiskandt, Henri Squire, Marko Topo, as well as Florian Broska secured their spots in the main draw.
