TURIN/STARNBERG, May 13, 2025

The stage is set for a thrilling second day at the Piemonte Open Intesa Sanpaolo, as the main draw action of the ATP Challenger 175 tournament kicks off on Tuesday at the Circolo della Stampa Sporting Club in Turin. After Monday’s qualifying rounds warmed up the courts, the spotlight now turns to some of Italy’s brightest young prospects, poised to make their mark on home soil.

Among them are two rising stars born in 2007, Jacopo Vasamì and Federico Cinà, both making their much-anticipated debuts in Turin. Vasamì, a left-hander from Rome with a powerful game and a big serve, currently ranked World No. 9 in the ITF juniors, will open the day’s play on the show court (Campo Stadio) against Chun-Hsin Tseng of Chinese Taipei, a former junior World No.1 now aiming to climb the pro ranks.

Later, in the newly introduced evening session (starting at 5 PM), it’s Cinà’s turn. Already impressive this year with main draw wins as a wild card at the ATP Masters 1000 events in Miami and Madrid, the Sicilian teenager faces a stern test in Juan Manuel Cerundolo. The Argentine is a seasoned Challenger competitor with 10 titles and an ATP Tour title in Cordoba (2021) to his name.

Other Italian hopes on Tuesday include Federico Arnaboldi, who takes on rising US-American Ethan Quinn, and Matteo Gigante, fresh off a strong showing at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. He will close the day’s schedule on Centre Court in a potentially electric clash against Alexander Bublik, the former World No. 17 known as much for his flair and unpredictability as his shot-making.

Italian qualifiers battle for final spots

Monday’s qualifying matches also shone a spotlight on Italy’s depth of talent. Lorenzo Carboni, born in 2006 and a pupil of renowned coach Riccardo Piatti, came from behind to defeat Germany’s Patrick Zahraj 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 and will play Ukraine’s Oleg Prihodko for a spot in the main draw.

An all-Italian clash between Andrea Pellegrino and Stefano Napolitano guarantees one more Italian qualifier. Pellegrino arrives in form after reaching the final of the ATP Challenger 175 in Portugal, also as a qualifier. He kicked off his Torino campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Federico Campana. “That week in Portugal gave me a lot of confidence and reminded me of my potential,” said the 28-year-old from Puglia. “The field here is really strong, but I’m feeling good and want to keep this momentum going.”

Additional Italians vying for qualification include Raul Brancaccio, who convincingly defeated Marco Cecchinato 6-1, 6-1 and will meet Vitaliy Sachko of Ukraine; and Giovanni Fonio, who outplayed Giovanni Oradini in straight sets and now faces Spain’s Carlos Sanchez Jover. Jover edged past local favorite Edoardo Zanada in two tiebreaks in a tightly contested match.
