TURIN, April 24, 2016
Gastao Elias rallied past Enrique López-Pérez 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to capture the trophy of the €42,500 Torino Challenger held at Monviso Tennis Club on Sunday.
The third seed from Portugal won 67% of his first service points and capitalized on three of his 12 break point chances to overcome the Spaniard after two hours and 16 minutes in the pair’s first tour meeting.
Elias takes away €6,150 in prize money as well as 90 ATP ranking points. It was Elias’ fifth career title on the Challenger Tour. He will break into the top 100 on Monday for the first time.
“I am very pleased to win this title here,” Elias said. “It was an amazing week but it was also very tough. I was mentally very strong, which was the key to success. Getting into the top 100 is great and I hope I am able to continue like this.”
