Juan Mónaco won the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston for the second time, coming back from a set down to beat defending champion Jack Sock 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
The 32-year-old Argentine, who missed six months last fall and earlier this year due to surgery on this right wrist in August, capitalized on five of his 15 break points, winning 63% of the total points to seal victory in two hours and 18 minutes. He wins his first tournament since Düsseldorf in May 2013.
“It’s amazing. Feels amazing to hold that trophy again… It’s almost like a dream come true… The hard work really paid off. Today was a quick movie of my life,” told Mónaco, who receives $91,630 in prize money and 250 ATP ranking points.
“I’m not sure exactly what happened with my body. Last night I didn’t feel great, was sweating even in a very air-conditioned room. So maybe coming down with something. But it doesn’t take away from his battle and his fight today,” told Sock.
