World No. 36 Camila Giorgi remains the only seeded player left in the singles draw of the Tenerife Ladies Open. The fourth seed of the WTA 250 hard-court event booked her spot in the quarterfinals on a sunny Thursday at the Abama Tennis Academy in Guía de Isora, a municipality in the western part of Tenerife.

Giorgi eased past Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-1, 6-2. The 29-year-old Italian, who captured her biggest career title at the WTA 1000 event in Montreal in August, sent down two aces and won 83 per cent of her first-service points to advance after one hour and nine minutes.

Giorgi explained afterwards that she felt a bit tired after her triumph in Canada and during the following tournaments in the United States, where she lost her opening match on three consecutive occasions.

“Today I played much better and had some rhythm thanks to the first round. It was a good match,” she said.

Giorgi will next take on Arantxa Rus from the Netherlands, who defeated Belgium’s Greet Minnen 6-1, 6-2 after one hour and 24 minutes.

Later in the afternoon, Marie Camila Osorio Serrano backed up her first Top 10 victory over Elina Svitolina in the first round with another powerful performance, winning 6-4, 6-2 against Mayar Sherif of Egypt. The 19-year-old Colombian converted six of her seven break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 16 minutes.

“I played her before and I knew it’s going to be tough,” Osorio Serrano said. “She played a really great match today. I felt tired in the first set and was down in the second but I remained calm and that’s good. It’s my first time here, I love Tenerife. I am so happy to be here.”

The teenager will next challenge Saisai Zheng of China, who knocked out No. 7 seed Clara Tauson from Denmark 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-4 after two hours and 48 minutes.

In the bottom half of the draw, Irina-Camelia Begu from Romania rallied past Croatian qualifier Donna Vekic 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(4) in the longest match of the day, which lasted three hours and six minutes. Begu will next face US-American Ann Li.

Alize Cornet of France and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova from the Czech Republic round out the final eight.
